Rowley apartments

The town of Rowley is home to nearly 6,000 residents and is part of Essex County. Rowley was initially settled as a plantation by 20 English families that arrived to the region on the ship, John of London, which also carried the first printing press to the region.

Rowley was incorporated in 1639 and in the following couple of years a stone bridge and dam were constructed on the banks of the Mill River to support the fulling mill that operated in town, the first of its kind in the colonies. The bridge, made of hand crafted granite, was the first in North America to be made completely of stone.

Hemp, cotton and flax cloth were products for which the town became known. The sawmill that began operating in Rowley in the mid-1600s continues to run today. The local economy leaned heavily on shoe factories and boat building at the beginning of the 20th century.

Its town common, also referred to as "the training place," got its name because it was the site of Benedict Arnold's encampment and training site during the Revolutionary War. These days Rowley has a fire and police department and offers residents the use of a free public library.
