Rockport listings

The town of Rockport is a community of about 7,000 residents in Essex County. Sitting on the end of the Cape Ann Peninsula, Rockport lies about 40 miles away from Boston and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

The town was originally settled in 1623 and incorporated in 1840.

Rockport used to be a portion of Gloucester that remained void of people for about a century. The pine that graced the area was harvested by workers in Gloucester for building ships, and was also a fertile fishing site. A dock was constructed in the area that would become Rockport in the mid-1700s, and by the early 1800s, Rockport's granite quarries were in full swing, with the stone from this region used in buildings, landmarks and monuments all along the east coast of the United States. The quarries of Rockport grew with the onset of the Industrial Revolution.

Even when the demand for granite saw a decline due to the increasing use of concrete through The Great Depression, Rockport's status as a vacation spot served as a desirable backdrop for a growing population of artists. Its rocky beaches and its historic status as a fishing town still brings in lots of artists and photographers today, which led to the creation of the Rockport Art Association.

Today this residential town is still home to a handful of lobster fishermen and artists, and remains known locally as a highly desirable vacation destination.

A one-bedroom, one bathroom apartment recently listed on Pigeon Hill Street may be one way to go for potential new Rockport residents. This rental space is graced with gorgeous hardwood flooring and stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher.
