DNA Lofts is a 59-unit complex located in North Central Dorchester, just a few steps away from the Red Line and conveniently located near 1-93, Boston Medical and U-Mass Boston. Developers combined the best of two worlds, converting the historic Miesel Press Building (built in 1903) and constructing two new four-story wings as well as a parking garage. The buildings form a horseshoe shape and surround a professionally landscaped courtyard.
During the conversion of the Miesel building, architects retained many striking elements of the building's previous life. Ceiling heights range from 10 to 16 feet, wooden beams and brick have been left exposed wherever they add architectural interest, windows are large and some areas feature concrete floors that have been highly polished. Some of these elements have been recreated in the newly constructed units as well.
Many different floor plans are available at DNA lofts. Units range in size from 600 to 1,800 square feet. DNA Lofts is far from the average conversion of an industrial building to residential units. Although certain elements have been retained, the developers ensured that the new construction as well as the core building incorporated contemporary features in both the interior and exterior designs. For example, the new wings share a roof line, but feature royal blue paneling on the parapet and wide cornices that are light blue to add an edgy contrast.
