South Boston is one of Boston's largest neighborhoods, and is filled with history & beautiful architecture. South Boston became a booming neighborhood when thousands of Irish Immigrants fled Ireland because of the potato famine in the 1800's. South Boston also has some beautiful open space such as revolutionary-war era Castle Island, as well as the South Boston Waterfront, also known as the Seaport District. Many Oscar-winning movies have been filmed in South Boston lately, such as "Good Will Hunting", and "The Departed". South Boston, or "Southie" as many call it, is home to one of the largest St. Patrick's Day Parades in the world. St. Patrick's Day is March 17th every year. Due to the separation of Church and State, it can't be considered a city holiday. Coincidentally, March 17th is also the day Boston evacuated the British out of Boston in 1776. Hundreds of thousands of Bostonians celebrate every March 17th, "Evacuation Day" in South Boston, as there is no school for children or work for this wonderful city holiday!
